GPS In All Bengal Trawlers Is Mandatory

Kolkata: To keep track of the fishing trawlers in order to prevent disasters as well as help them if faced with a disaster, the Bengal Government has decided to fit all trawlers with GPS devices. A controlling station being built in Kakdwip would be in touch with all the trawlers.

The wireless sets that current trawlers carry have a maximum range of 20 km whereas a GPS device has a range of 100 km.

Another decision that the government has taken is that it will make sure that all trawlers carry adequate life jackets. The government will also make sure, before a trawler makes it to the sea, that it is seaworthy in all respects. If required, training will be given to the trawler navigators.
