Kolkata: West Bengal’s ‘Golden Girl’ Swapna Barman returned home on Friday.
Jalpaiguri’s Swapna returned wearing her gold medal. She was welcomed by state’s
sports minister Arup Biswas and Olympic Association president Ajit Banerjee.
Swapna Barman’s sensational performance in javelin throw confirmed her gold and on
August 29 she won it after the 800m. She ended it with 6026 points. This is India’s
11th gold in Indonesia.
The other Purnima Hembram finished with 5837 points and finished the competition
from fourth place. The third year Physical Education student from Calcutta
University has also received guidance from JJ Shobha, the Indian heptathlon record
holder with 6211 points.
Swapna, coming from a poor family, won hearts after winning. Her win sets an example to the athletes of the 21st century.
