Priyanka Dutta, Kolkata: Acting on the specific intelligence, the officers of DRI Kolkata have busted a syndicate involved in gold smuggling spread over Bangladesh and India. As a part of the operations conducted by the agency, a total seizure of Rs 1.21 crores of goods has done.
Three persons namely Md. Jahirul Islam Kayum, Sri Rajkumar Gupta and Sri Jugal Kumar Singh have been arrested in this case including a Bangladeshi national. In the initial part of the operation, 20 pcs of gold biscuits weighing 2.519 kg worth Rs 70.45 lakh were seized from the intercepted Bangladesh national.
Thereafter, in an immediate follow up action conducted by the DRI at the premises of the recipient Shri Rajkumar Gupta, a jweller based in Bara Bazaar, gold ornaments, silver granules & anklets valued at Rs 10.72 lakh & Indian currency of Rs 39.83 lakh were also recovered and seized on 18th September.
The jeweller Sri Rajkumar Gupta had come to take the delivery of the smuggled gold at Major International Guest House hotel in Mirzab Galib Street, Kolkata where the Bangladeshi smuggler Md Jahirul Islam Kayum was staying.
Both the smuggler and the jeweller admitted that in the past too, they had smuggled and received gold respectively in this fashion from Bangladesh into India on several occasions. Investigation further reveals that the currency recovered from the premises of the jeweler was the sale proceeds against the delivery of the smuggled gold. As such, the same, being liable for confiscation under Customs Act was also seized.
Three persons including the main jeweller were arrested and produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kolkata. All the three persons have been remanded to judicial custody till 1st October. Further investigation is in progress.
