Girl Commits Suicide During Facebook Live At Sonarpur

Sonarpur: In a shocking incident, a teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Bayedepara of Sonarpur on Monday, the police said.

The deceased is identified as Mousumi Mistri has streamed a Facebook Live video of her suicide which went viral on social media. Just before hanging herself she had a Whatsapp conversation with Aryan.

On Sunday afternoon, Mousumi Mistri went to meet her male friend Aryan who is a resident of Gharsia of Sonarpur after getting a phone call from him. She returned home late at 6 pm. The bereaved mother said that Mousumi’s mother Shampa Mistri claimed that her daughter was silent when she returned home. She did not talk to her as well.

According to her mother, she was upset over her relationship with Aryan. Mousumi’s mother who works as a maid in a hospital left the house by 6:30 pm for work. Mousumi was alone in the house as her brother and father work elsewhere.

On Monday morning, when Mousumi did not wake up till eight o’clock in the morning, her mother became suspicious. She tried to look inside the house through the window. She was shocked to see her daughter’s body hanging in the house. It was found that she had gone live on Facebook while committing suicide.

The body has been sent for autopsy, the police said. Further investigation is underway.
In 2015, the number of student suicides stood at 8,934. In the five years leading to 2015, 39,775 students killed themselves. The number of attempted suicides, many unreported, is likely to be much higher.

India has one of the world’s highest suicide rates for youth aged 15 to 29, according to a 2012 Lancet report, which illustrated the need for urgent interventions for this demographic.
