Chennai: A 25-year-old man died and at least 9 other workers were injured while the vehicle meant for joy rides that they were testing, crashed, at Kishkinta theme park near Tambaram on Wednesday evening. The manager and the owner of the park were arrested in this accident.

The incident took place minutes after the theme park was closed for the day.Mani (25) of Nallur village near Somangalam died on the way to hospital. The others were admitted at a private hospital in Tambaram for treatment, police said.

The staff at the Kishkinta amusement park said a mechanical fault in the giant-wheel resulted in higher oscillation of the cabins attached to the wheel and the workers fell on their side.

And then the coaches of the giant wheel – like a mega tea cup that tilts from one side to the other – came crashing down from a height of nearly 15 feet.

One person died, and seven others have been injured. The police this evening arrested Josh Punnish, the owner of the amusement park and a manager on charges that include criminal negligence that resulted in death.

The Disco Dancer was among the top draws at the park till last year’s floods left it damaged. Last evening’s ride was meant to be a trial run before the ride opened to the public.
