Kolkata: General Secretary of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) of North Bengal Agriculture University was arrested on Saturday in connection with the assault of six journalists.
The scribes went to the University on Friday to collect news of ‘dean gherao’ by union students. The gherao of University dean Tapan Haati started from Thursday as TMCP placed number of demands in front of him. Though 24 hours passed the dean was still under the union students’ scanner. So these journalists went to the University to check the ground reality. But right from their entry into the University campus, they were not allowed to click pictures as their cameras were snatched. They were not allowed to collect any information either.
District reporter of Kolkata 24×7 Subhendu Bhattacharya was brutally attacked along with other journalists. He received several injury marks on his chest and head. Other journalists who were assaulted during the scuffle incident were Debasish Mukherjee, Darpan Pran Pratim Pal, Sashikesh Roy, Hirak Roy, Bipul Das, Ashok Dey and few others.
A complaint was lodged at the police station after the incident. Though general secretary was arrested, the leader of TMCP Puran Pokhral is still absconding. These six journalists were admitted to Cooch Behar’s MJN hospital in critical condition.
