Kolkata: CPI(M) leader and former Left Front Minister Gautam Deb on Friday said that it is impossible for Left Front to defeat Trinamool Congress alone. He has said that a coalition is needed to defeat TMC in the 2016 Vidhansabha polls. Although the veteran CPI(M) leader has not mentioned the name of any party for the coalition, the political circles are of the opinion that Gautam Deb has indirectly mentioned the name of the congress in his statement.
The Congress leaders on the other have also expressed desire to come together and join hands with the left. Reacting to the statement by Deb Senior Congress Leader Abdul Mannan said, “People don’t want TMC. TMC can be defeated through coalition. Gautam Deb has spoken correctly.”
On the other hand TMC leader and State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim has said, “The common people are by the side of TMC. Even if CPI(M) partners Congress they will not be able to defeat TMC. People of West Bengal believes TMC and Mamata Banerjee. The acceptability of CPI(M) has reached its lowest level.”
Speaking on the issue, Forward Block leader Udayan Guha said, “Left front is fighting against the TMC in a combined manner. It is not clear whom Gautam Deb wants as the coalition partner. May be he is not happy with us.”
The Left Front which had supported the Congress UPA I government from outside in 2004, withdrew support following the Indo-US Nuclear deal. Now, with a senior party leader like Deb mentioning the need of a coalition may bring about some changes in the political equation in the state and the comment may not go well with the other partners of the Left Front.
