West Bardhaman: A gang of six armed men raided an unguarded nationalised bank here in West Bardhaman and decamped with Rs 24 lakh on Friday, holding employees and customers at gun point and locking them up in a room before the escape.
Police said the robbers had fled on three motorbikes with everyone’s cellphones. The gang members also took away the hard disc of the CCTV footage to hide their identity.
The police said the six had reached the newly opened branch of Canara Bank at College More around 1pm on three motorbikes with three bags.
“While two of them stood guard at the gate, four others entered the bank brandishing pistols. There were only two customers, along with four bank employees, including the manager,” said a police officer.
When manager Sandip Kumar refused, the robbers hit him on the nose with pistol butt.
A bank employee said: “We do not have any armed guard at the branch which opened only 10 months ago.”
As the robbers left the bank employees, customers broke open the door and came out and raised an alarm.
