Kolkata: Somnath Chatterjee on Wednesday said that, “Today left parties are getting weaker and weaker, even in West Bengal they are being ignored, Sitaram Yechury’s suggestions were rejected by Central Committee which shows that Prakash Karat lobby is still controlling the Left. Not good for future.”

A rare vote at the CPM central committee meeting on a proposal to ally with the Congress to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its rejection comes as a major setback for general secretary Sitaram Yechury. The committee members overwhelmingly supported a rival motion by former general secretary Prakash Karat and leader from Kerala, S. Ramachandran Pillai.

Sitaram Yechury offered to resign the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) after it emerged that his proposal to align with the Congress didn’t have majority support even within the party’s highest decision-making forum.
