Frog Flashes With Light After It Swallows A Firefly

An eerie video captures the moment a firefly glows from inside the stomach of a frog that has just gobbled it up.

The hungry frog, recorded clinging to a wall in Nashville, US, illuminates the room as the firefly continues to glow from inside its belly.

Despite the unusual sight, the firefly is not actually alive, nor is it a particularly rare phenomena. Rather it is the result of an organic chemical process that creates the warm glow called bioluminescence.

When oxygen combines with calcium and the chemical luciferin in the presence of luciferase, the bioluminecent enzyme is produced, creating the entrancing glow.

As the fly is absorbed into the frog’s digestive system, the chemicals are exposed to each other again and the fly appears to be alive from inside its belly.
