Four Killed In Bangladesh’s Jamalpur Poll Violence


Dhaka: Four people including two students were killed during a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates during UP polls in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district on Saturday.

Local sources said 30 more people including a cop were also injured in the clash between the  supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate and the AL rebel candidate at Khutarchar Ebtedayee Madrasah polling centre at about 12 noon.

The dead were identified as Nurul Islam, 65, of Kutuber Char, and Ziaur Rahman, 35, Mazed, 14, and Nabirul, 15, of Sheikhpara, in Dewanganj upazila.

Of them, Mazed was a class VIII student and Nabirul was a class IX student of a local madrasah. Among the injured, constables Ibrahim, 50, and Solaiman Nayan, 40, were admitted to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital. Jamalpur assistant superintendent of police Yunus Mia told media that they have confirmed about four deaths.

Jamalpur civil surgeon Mushayer ul Islam said 20 of the injured were admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital while the rest to local health complex. Meanwhile, voting at Khutarchar Ebtedayee Madrasah polling centre in Dewanganj upazila was suspended following the bloody clash.
