Patna: In a major development ahead of the crucial Bihar polls Former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s son Shubham was detained by the Bihar police in Jehanabad after cash worth Rs 4 lakh was recovered from him.
Manjhi’s party Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) has accused the ruling JD(U) government of giving trouble to the Manjhi family. “The Election Commission should investigate that Manjhi’s family is being troubled by the government,” said Danish Rizwan, HAM spokesperson.
“He was carrying cash because payment had to be made to a contractor as some construction is going on at his residence,” Rizwan added.
A sixth-term MLA, 70-year-old Manjhi represented Makhdumpur (SC) seat in Jehanabad district on JD(U) ticket. He resigned as the member of Bihar legislative assembly on Tuesday.
Handpicked by the incumbent chief minister Nitish Kumar as his successor post-debacle in the general elections last year, Manjhi fell out with his predecessor after being asked to quit earlier this year by the JD(U) leadership.
