Jalpaiguri: At least 400 people have been affected in jalpaiguri district following release of excess water in Teesta river after rains in upper reaches. The affected areas are under Rajganj block of the district and people’s houses have inundated since last night, the block’s BDO TN Sherpa said.
A control room has been opened at Water Resources Bhawan in Kolkata to monitor the flood situation and co-ordinate rescue efforts which will operate till October 31. The sanctioned leaves of the engineers of the department has been cancelled.
The Dobaganj-Takhimari road has been flooded and the Jalpaiguri district administration is taking measures to provide relief to the affected people who are taking shelter in raised platforms. There are reports of rise in water level of Tosra river in neighbouring Alipurduar district where an alert has been issued, the district administration has said.
On the other had 27 people have been killed in Darjeeling as heavy rains triggered landslides.
