Kolkata: Heavy incessant rains trigger flood situation in West Bengal. Bengal government issued a flood alert and opened a control room in Nabanna on Monday. Several rivers in some districts were flowing above the danger level creating a flood-like situation.
State irrigation minister Rajib Banerjee held a video conference with Collectors of flood-affected districts. Burdwan East and West along with Midnapore, Birbhum, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia and parts of South 24-Parganas are badly affected due to the heavy rainfall in the past three days.
Even Kolkata witnessed heavy rainfall in the past couple of days leading to waterlogging in parts of south and north Kolkata are under water.
As there will be high tide in the afternoon, lock gates had to be closed so that river water do not enter the city. Pumping out of water has also been affected.
In east and west Midnapore districts too, rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Due to heavy rains and flooding, Vidyasagar University of Paschim Midnapore has cancelled its BEd examination.
Birbhum district is worst affected. Suri is also under water. Mamata Banerjee who is going to Delhi on Monday will discuss floods with the central ministers.State government has also said DVC not to leave extra water.
All DMs have been asked to be ready for floods. Nabanna officials are frequently interacting with the districts.
