Mumbai: INS Sindhughosh, a Kilo class submarine, was involved in a minor collision with a fishing trawler off the coast between Goa and Karwar two days ago, Naval officials said here on Sunday.
“The mishap happened between Thursday and Friday night when the submarine was involved in an exercise. As per the preconditions, it was operating in pitch dark. Only its periscope was up. An unlit fishing trawler collided with the periscope,” an official said.
He said the periscope was mildly damaged and the submarine entered the Mumbai dock for repairs.
“The repair operations will be carried soon,” an official said. The Defence Ministry has been informed of the accident.
The Sindhughosh class of submarines, which are Kilo class diesel-electric submarines, have been procured from Russia.
They have a displacement of 3,000 tonnes, a maximum diving depth of 300 metres and top speed of 18 knots.
