Kolkata: Four concrete bridges have been collapsed in the last seven years since the Trinamool government came to power. Iron bridges are also feared to collapse. For example, Khidirpur to Monginpur connector iron bridge is also in danger. So Urban Minister Firhad Hakim favored to build the bridge with steel.
Firhad Hakim went to visit the bridge on Wednesday afternoon. Then he said, “Now, I favored to build any bridge with steel. In that case, the bridge will be bent due to extra load, but the accident can be avoided. ”
One more body was recovered Thursday from the debris of the collapsed Majerhat Bridge in the southern part of the city, taking the toll in the incident to three, a police official said. The body was identified as that of Goutam Mondal (45), a labourer hailing from Murshidabad district, who was missing along with another labourer Pranab Dey since the accident on Tuesday, he said. Mondal was working as a cook in the extension of the Metro rail project going on adjacent to the Majerhat Bridge, he said.
The state government has constituted a committee under chief secretary Malay De to investigate the cause of the collapse. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said as many as 20 bridges in Kolkata and Howrah are weak and unsafe as they are beyond their “expiry dates”.
Banerjee told reporters that the rescue operation was complete. She said the Metro Railways has been asked to stop its work at Majerhat temporarily till a committee headed by Chief Secretary Moloy Dey gives its report within a week.
Already the matter of making steel bridge has been discussed with PWD officials. Now the matter is pending for approval.
