Firhad Hakim Proposes Use Of Steel To Construct Bridges

Kolkata: Firhad Hakim, minister for urban development and municipal affairs, has
suggested the use of steel in the construction of bridges in the state.

Four bridges collapsed during chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s tenure. The
condition of several bridges are not up-to-the-mark as the irons have turned rusty.
The condition of the iron-made bridge which connects Khidirpur to Mominpur is also
not good.

After inspecting several bridges, Hakim said, “Have informed the PWD department to
construct bridges using steel. In that case, the bridges will bend but not break
due to extra load, hence avoiding big mishap.”

The Majerhat bridge collapsed on Tuesday killing 3 and injuring 27. The bridge
collapsed in the busy hours of the day when maximum vehicles were on the road. The
injured are receiving treatment at SSKM and CMRI. The CM cut short her North Bengal
visit and returned back to the city the next day. After inspecting the place of
incident, Mamata Banerjee announced compensation.

As per sources, Mamata Banerjee had asked for a report on the condition of the
Majerhat bridge in July this year. The tenders were summoned too but to no help.
Mamata lashed out at a press meet on Thursday as to why nothing fruitful happened
despite her efforts.

Mamata Banerjee also asked for reports from the officers on the condition of other
bridges along with Majerhat bridge.
