Mathura: Thousands of important documents turned into ashes on Monday after a major fire broke out in the record room and an adjacent room at the Regional Transport Office in the district.
The incident took place around 3 am today and the fire was doused after around 8 hours, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Ranjeet Singh said. “Actual financial loss is being ascertained however it must be several lakh. The loss of record has placed extra burden on us,” he said.
Several fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames which lasted for several hours due to the water shortage as the tubewell in the office premises was not functioning, Singh said, adding that, roughly over fifteen thousand vehicle registration records were burnt.
