Kolkata: Some officers of the fire brigade is reported to have become ill due to the smoke. The roads have been blocked. There is a huge traffic jam in the adjoining areas. The officers are confident of bringing the fire under control.

Fire has been brought under control after nearly six hours. 30 engines of the fire brigade was pressed into service. Though no causalities were reported, few fire fighters fell ill while dousing the flames. According to the local people, the workers had lit up a stove inside a godown from which the fire spread. Investigation has ordered to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Mayor Sovan Deb Chatterjee has reached the spot and said that the officers are working hard over there. He even said that CM Mamata Banerjee has assured all forms of assistance to the locals of that area who are affected by fire. The fire brigades have almost brought the fire under control, the mayor added. All the adjoining roads leading to Amherst street has been blocked for safety purpose.
According to sources, gas cutters are being deployed to bring the fire under control. Jawed Khan, the fire minister is also present at the spot. The actual reason for the fire is yet to be known. Water is being used from a nearby reservoir to combat the fire.
The Disaster Management group is also present at the spot. No casualties have been recorded yet.

Fire broke out at Bowbazar in the afternoon at an area which is popularly known as the ‘Bank Of India’ zing. According to sources, flames were seen coming out of a plywood store of the area. Over 20 fire engines have reached the spot to bring the fire under control. The police of Muchipara police station have also been to the area. The plywood shop is located opposite the Lady Duffrin hospital at Amherst street. As per sources, a couple of shops adjoining to the plywood shop has been affected. The fire brigade officers are trying their heart and soul to arrest the flames.
