New Delhi: A Delhi court sentenced Mahmood Farooqui, the co-director of Bollywood film Peepli Live, to seven years in jail on Monday in the rape case of an American woman.
Delhi’s Saket Court had convicted Farooqui on July 30 for raping the 35-year-old woman in 2015. The woman was in India to conduct research for her doctoral thesis from Columbia University.
Farooqui, however, had denied the allegations, saying he was falsely implicated. Earlier, the court had started the trial in the case after framing charges of rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Farooqui.
A chargesheet was filed against the filmmaker alleging he had raped the research scholar at his Sukhdev Vihar house in south Delhi on March 28.
