Mumbai: Film director Mahmood Farooqui, best known for ‘Peepli Live’, has been convicted for raping a 30-year-old researcher from the US.
The woman – a scholar from Colombia University – had said in her complaint that Mahmood Farooqui had raped her at his house in Delhi last year, when she had gone to get his help for her research work.
A case was filed on June 19, 2015. Farooqui, 38, had denied the allegations, saying he was falsely implicated.
Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain today held the director guilty. The arguments on sentencing will be heard on August 2. The punishment for rape is a minimum jail term for 7 years.
