Fierce Cyclone Hits WB’s Malda, 2 Dead


Malda: A fierce cyclone has hit Malda on Saturday morning. Two people, including a seven-year-old child, died in  the cyclonic storm.

The storm has injured around 35 people and 3 of them stated to be critical.

District Magistrate Tanmoy Chakrabarty confirmed death of two people. He said, “The cyclone has affected various areas of Malda like Gajol, Bamongola, Habibpur, old Malda, Ratua and Chanchol-II. Houses have been damaged, trees fell and electricity lines have been disconnected in these areas. We have directed the BDOs to reach the respective areas with rescue materials to help people.”

Manirul Islam (7), a resident of Chanchol Block in Malda, went out during the cyclone, when a wall broke apart due to the wind pressure and landed on him. Manirul lost his life while he was being taken to the hospital. Another deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Mukuleswar Rehman of Gajol block.

There has been extensive damage to mango and litchi orchards due to the sudden storm. District administration is yet to gauge the amount of agricultural damage.

The most affected areas include Gajol, Babongola and Hobibpur.
