‘Fascist’ Left On Bengal Panchayat Election

Kolkata: The CPM has drawn parallels between panchayat poll-related attacks on the Opposition in Bengal, the “horrific incidents” in Kathua and Unnao, and the US’s bombing in Syria, calling them an assault of “fascist forces” on democracy.

“The ghastly incidents in Unnao or Kathua or even in Syria and the attack on the Opposition in Bengal are not isolated and unrelated,” Bengal CPM chief and politburo member Surjya Kanta Mishra said during a Left rally here on Monday for “restoration of democracy”.

On Saturday, the CPM politburo had condemned the “brutal” rape in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao and a child’s murder and assault in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua. “All of these are fascist attacks on democracy and our call is to save democracy wherever it is attacked,” said Mishra, who led the rally of 17 Left parties.
