Thane Farmers Protest: Violence Injures 12 Cops, Case Registered


Update: The situation is normal now. Both curfew and Section 144 will not be imposed in the area: Police Commissioner, Thane.

Some protesters turned violent& 12 policemen injured. We are registering case of attempt to murder against protesters. Some villagers attacked a police team & DCP, who then used pellet gun on them,4 villagers injured,being treated.

Mumbai: A clash between protesting farmers and the police took place along a national highway in Maharashtra near Thane on Thursday. Several policemen have been injured, sources said.

Additional forces have been deployed in the area along with riot control vehicles.

The farmers were holding protests over the Navy walling up an old British-period aerodrome in the area. The 1600-acre premises belongs to the Navy. But over the years, it had been encroached upon by the locals.

The farmers had petitioned the authorities that the land be given to them. After the authorities refused, protests ensued.

Today, farmers from 17 villages were holding protests at 10 spots. The biggest of them was on the Thane-Badlapur highway, where they had blocked traffic. When the police tried to disperse them, chaos The farmers and their families block 10 roads and torched vehicles.

Earlier, Rs 30,000 crore of farm loans were waived off in Maharashtra amidst large-scale protests.

The BJP-led government in Maharashtra had backed down on Sunday and agreed in principle to a loan waiver for all sections of farmers. The farmers had been agitating for the past 10 days and finally, the loans were waived off.

Few weeks back, Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh turned battleground over farmers lodging protests for loan waiver and other issues.  Subsequent firing killed 6 of them.
