Burdwan: Heavy losses due to a dwindling market price forced a potato farmer named Guddu Murmu to commit suicide on Monday at Chatimdanga village under Bhatar area in Burdwan district.The deceased’s son said that his father had taken a loan of 50,000 rupees loan from a money lender and cultivated potato over five Bighas of land. Although he reaped a good harvest, he incurred heavy losses due to the low market price. Unable to return the due amount he committed suicide.
On the other hand the village head claimed that family feud forced Murmu to commit suicide. Bhatar police is investigating the matter further.
Situation became tense after Murmu’s suicide in the area. Farmers on the other hand demanded an increase in the potato price and cold storage facility.
