Hooghly: All four members of a family in Hooghly district of West Bengal were found hanging in their home on Thursday morning and police suspect it is a result of the social stigma attached to the unmarried girl becoming pregnant. Those who ended their lives included a middle-aged couple Rabin Pandit, 45, Kalpana Pandit, 40, their son and daughter who became pregnant.
The girl was around 19 and her brother was a student of class XI and aged around 17. The police have arrested Ranjan Pandit, a cousin brother, who they suspect of maintaining illicit relation with the girl. The accused is in his mid-twenties. The youth is the son of the aunt of the girl. The incident took place at Chanditala, about 25 km from Kolkata.
Around 11:30 am on Thursday, police took the bodies of the four to the local hospital. The suspicion of the police was triggered by a few words scribbled on the hand of the brother who hung himself. Ranjan Pandit’s name was written there along with the words that he was responsible for the tragic end of the entire family.
Officers summoned the cousin to Chanditala police station and grilled him, when he confessed his relation with the girl.
