Sacramento: Facebook has introduced its first ever temporary reaction – a flower emoji – since expanding the ‘Like’ button.
The new icon was introduced to mark Mother’s Day over the weekend to help users of the social networking site send a message to their mums. Don’t worry Brits, Mother’s Day for us was on March 26 – so you haven’t forgotten to send your dear mum flowers (virtual ones or otherwise).
But for many other countries around the world, including the US, the second Sunday in May is their Mother’s Day, celebrating it yesterday. In a statement, Facebook said: “In honour of Mothers’ Day, we are testing the ability for people in a few markets to leave a flower reaction.”
Other users have also been able to decorate their messages with flowers in advance of the special occasion while using the Facebook Messenger app.
“We hope you enjoy sharing these sweet flowers as you celebrate….whether that’s by being with your mom, or by thanking all the moms that make up your virtual village, the mother-like figures you learn from and all your special friends,” the social media giant added.
The success of the digital flower, which was only available for a limited time, could mark the beginning of many new temporary reactions being rolled out in future.
Last February, Facebook launched an extension of the ‘Like’ button called ‘Reactions’ – which allows users to select from six emotions including ‘Angry’, ‘Sad’ and ‘Wow’ – worldwide.
