Tinsukia: A suspected ULFA militant has been gunned down by security forces in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday, said officials.
As per reports, following a secret tip off a joint team of army and police launched a combing operation in Tinsukia’s Kakopathar area bordering Arunachal Pradesh. The militants upon sensing the presence of security forces fired on them and a gun battle ensued.
During the encounter security forces killed a suspected ULFA (I) cadre identified as Prashanta Bagh Phukan alias Mekuri, while another managed to fled the spot. Mekuri has been involved in the Kakopathar police station attack last year.
The militant outfit lost much of its ground in Assam due to faltering public support and brike into two factions. The slain militant is believed to be the cadre of Paresh Baruah led faction of ULFA.
