London: Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes after a car collided with an energy plant, leading to a gas leak.
Purley Way has been closed as a result of the accident, which is likely to cause severe delays for drivers. The Metropolitan Police tweeted-
Emergency services remain on scene following a gas leak in #Croydon. The incident is not being treated as terror related.

There is reportedly a 250-metre evacuation cordon around the site, and many residents were forced to find alternative overnight accommodation.
After the incident, the Metroplitan Police wrote on Twitter: “In attendance along with London Fire at Whitestone Way following a collision between a car and an energy plant.“This incident is NOT being treated as suspicious. Local residents being evacuated as a precaution due the potential gas leak in the area. There have been no arrests and no injuries.”
Public transport has also been affected, with no services running between Mitcham Junction and Reeves Corner at present.
