Kolkata: Elections to seven civic bodies spread over five districts in the state are likely to be held on 6 August Sunday. The five civic bodies are-Ranaghat; Haldia, and Panskura in East Midnapore; Durgapur in West Burdwan, Nalhati in Birbhum; and Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri.
In a communique to the state government, the State Election Commission (SEC) today stated that it was in favour of conducting the civic polls there on 6 August. SEC sent the communique in response to a letter from the state government suggesting some dates for the polls pending in the seven civic bodies.
Going by the municipal election laws, the state urban development department is now required to issue a notification for the polls, to be followed up by a matching notification by the poll panel.
Election notification is usually issued about a month in advance of the scheduled poll date as the model code of conduct automatically comes into effect with the issuance of the notification.
