My Election Shows Democracy’s Greatness: President-Elect Kovind


New Delhi: After having secured a comfortable win in the 2017 Presidential election, an emotional Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday said his foremost duty would be to uphold the Indian Constitution and serve the marginalised sections of the society.

Addressing the media, soon after the announcement, Kovind said his ascension to the President’s office was a message for the people who work with utmost dedicational and honesty.

“This is an emotional moment for me today. My election to the country’s top constitutional chair is an encouraging message for every hardworking and dedicated citizen. One who is honest gets his due,” Kovind said.

He also calls the election the “greatness of democracy”, President-elect Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday pledged to work for the betterment of the country

He also congratulated and thanked joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar.

Earlier, Kumar too extended her best wishes to President-elect Kovind after he was elected as the 14th President of India.

“My best wishes with Kovindji as it has fallen upon him to uphold Constitution in letter and spirit in these challenging times,” Kumar said.

She said while election may be over, she would continue to uphold the values of her ideology.

“Today, the 20th of July, my battle for ideology doesn’t end. It will continue. Because the ideology, value system and principles I am fighting for are held scared by most people of my country.”

Kumar enumerated those values.

“I will continue to fight for social justice, inclusivenss, secularism, transparency, freedom of expression, freedom of the press and eradicating the caste system will all the strength on my partue,” Kumar said.

She also thanked members of the collegium, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and leaders of all the political parties who supported her.

Kovind on Thursday secured 65.65 percent of the total value of votes polled from the electoral college, massively sweeping the election.
