Kolkata: East-West Metro Corridor in Kolkata has got its first-ever train coach which is likely to be commissioned with a truncated route around June this year. The sleek, all air-conditioned coach built by Bangalore-based BEML Ltd, reached Kolkata on Thursday.
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL), which is implementing the East-West Metro Corridor project, said that a few more coaches will arrive in Kolkata over the next two months. A rake of the East-West Metro that will run from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan is to have six coaches.
KMRCL has plans to start a trial run for trains on the stretch between Sector V and Salt Lake stadium on EM Bypass spanning over 5.2 km. The stretch has six stations Sector V, Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Centre, Bengal Chemical, and Stadium.
On successful completion of the trail run, the stretch is likely to be thrown open for passenger train service from mid this year. This will mark the beginning of commissioning the East-West Metro Corridor that covers a total distance of 16.6 km.
