East-West Metro Project Touches Another Milestone

Kolkata: The East-West project touched another milestone after the Metro network received its first power connection.

The East West Metro will connect the proposed Mahakaran station (Kolkata) with the terminating station Howrah Maidan. It will run a stretch of 2.9 km. On the Howrah Maidan side, the boring machine has been drilled 90 metre towards the river (Ganges). Work started on April 21 and completion target is June 2017. The first tunnel is likely to hit the river bed by October this year.

The trial run is due to begin in the middle of May along the elevated viaduct from Sector V to Salt Lake stadium. The substation with AC 33KV phase power will gradually energize the stations and the entire East-West network, from Sector V to Salt Lake in the first phase and eventually the entire 16.55km stretch between Howrah Maidan from Salt Lake.

The ‘receiving’ and ‘traction’ substations, armed with high-speed circuit breaker, have been constructed by Siemens with state-of-the-art technology from Germany. The electrical inspector to the Union power ministry has provided necessary technical approvals for energization.
