Earthquake Lifts Indonesia By 10 Inches: NASA

Jakarta: Scientists from NASA and the California Institute of Technology made a
ground deformation map of Indonesia after it was stuck by the powerful earthquake
which killed nearly 400 people. Their research showed that the earthquake has
lifted the Lombok Island by 25 centimetres or 10 inches.

The faultline in the northwest section of Lombok Island, which is near the
epicentre, has lifted the earth by a quarter of a metre. In other places, the earth
has dropped by 5-15 centimetres.

As per NASA, these sattelite observations can help authorities to respond to
earthquakes and other natural or manmade disasters.

It has been just a week since the 7 magnitude earthquake had struck Lombok. Lombok
is slowly recovering and some villagers are making plans for temporary replacements
of mosques that were flattened.

Lombok, a popular and less developed tourist destination than neighboring Bali, was
hit by three strong quakes in little over a week and has endured more than 500

A July 29 quake killed 16 people. An aftershock measuring magnitude 5.9 on Thursday
caused panic, more damage and more than two dozen injuries.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an
arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. In December 2004, a massive
magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people
in a dozen countries.
