Chennai: Train services were affected between Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram in the early hours of Friday after the engine of an express train bound for Assam derailed near Eraniel station.
Railway sources said No 15905 Kanyakumari – Dibrugarh Express train, which left Kanyakumari at 11pm on Thursday, derailed near Eraniel station at 1.10 am. A pair of locomotive wheels slipped from the track due to landslip after heavy rain in the region.
No loss of lives or injuries were reported since locomotive alone derailed.
Senior railway officials, including divisional railway manager, Thiruvananthapuram, rushed to the spot and carried out restoration works.
Train traffic was affected on the single line section between Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram Central. Though the track was restored around 6am, the following trains were cancelled and rescheduled on Friday.
No 56310 Nagercoil – Thiruvananthapuram passenger scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 6.45am and No 56311 Thiruvananthapuram – Nagercoil passenger scheduled to leave Thiruvananthapuram at 7am on Friday were cancelled.
No 56304 Nagercoil – Kottayam passenger scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 12.30 noon on Friday has been partially cancelled between Nagercoil Junction and Thiruvananthapuram Central.No 16606 Nagercoil – Mangaluru Ernad Express scheduled to leave Nagercoil junction at 2am has been rescheduled to leave at 7 am.No 16650 Nagercoil – Mangaluru Parasuram Express scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 4.20am on Friday was rescheduled to leave at 8am.Other trains between Nagercoil – Thiruvananthapuram Central had been detained till 7am, railway statement observed.
