Kolkata: Despite the strong measures initiated by the state government to fail the bandh, a resting city holding a leisurely bandh appeared on Thursday, April 30.
Although state government had increased the number of state run buses to curve the bandh influence, not many commuters were seen travelling. Key areas of the city otherwise bristling with office goers and crowed including Jadavpur, Gariahat, Rashbehari, Ballygunge appeared deserted on Thursday.
Not many vehicles are plying on EM Bypass. On the other hand TMC workers are holding rallies to fail the bandh. No report of any major violence has been received yet.
The state government on Wednesday issued a circular to the govt. employees to attend office. Mamata had also declared that any loss of property or life during the bandh will be compensated by her government.
The bandh also had effect across the state, Cooch Behar, Kakdeep, Haldia and other part of the state witnessed the same scene. Police arrested CPM leader Salil Bhattacharya and many workers from disrupting government bus services at Netajipara bus stand in Jalpaiguri.
A government bus has been targeted and pelted stone at College Street by Bandh supporters. The bristling Howrah station is deserted with people choosing to stay indoors. Over all the bandh has been a success failing the state governments effort.
Update 12:12: Bandh supporters damaged state run bus at Jorashanku. Tension prevails in the area. On the other hand, a BJP rally consisting 500 workers was halted at Hazra by police resulting a scuffle between them. The rally was forced halted as it was proceeding towards CM Mamata Banerjee’s house. Train services came to a halt at the Sealdah south route.
Update 12:42: Violent clashes broke out between TMC and CPM at Jadavpur. Police rushed to the spot. No reports of injury received yet. BJP leader Ashok Sarkar arrested while leading a rally at Karunamoyee in support of the bandh. Congress leader Prakash Upadhaya allegedly attacked Trinamool worker damaged his vehicle at Narkeldanga, ward nu-29.
Update 1:05: CPM office allegedly ransacked by Trinamool workers at Kasba. Trinamool goons attacked a CPM rally at the area. Police arrested 4 CPM workers. Congress leader Prakash Upadhaya accused of attacking Trinamool workers house and damaging vehicle. TMC leader Paresh Pal arrived at the spot.
