Rio De Janeiro: Indian archers Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi exited the Rio Olympics within 20 minutes of each, losing in the individual women’s pre-quarters on Thursday. Deepika was beaten 0-6 by Chinese Taipeir’s Ya-Ting Tan and Bombayla Devi 2-6 by Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia.

Deepika – who entered the Round of 16 by beating Georgia’s Kristine Esebua 6-4 and Italian Guendalina Sartori 6-2 – was no match for the world No 2, who beat her 28-27, 29-26 and 30-27. The best Deepika could manage were scores of 27 in the first and third sets, with a solitary bulls eye in the first.

Bombayla Devi had been excellent on Wednesday, beating Austrian archer Laurence Baldauff and the world No 10 Lin Shin-Chia by identical 6-2 margins. She struggled against Valencia, however, losing the first, third and fourth sets 26-28, 27-28 and 25-3 respectively. The only set she won was the second, 26-23. Unlike yesterday, when she hit eight 10-pointers, in the pre-quarters Bombayla hit just two.
