Death Toll Mounts To 11 In Shantipur Hooch Tragedy


Shantipur: In the tragic incident in Shantipur, death toll has been increased to eleven from seven on Thursday on consumption of spurious liquor. Eighteen people are hospitalised in a critical condition. Few people are in sensitive condition.

Police and administration became active after such tragic incident. CID has bbeen given the charge of investigation. One Officer-in-charge and two circle inspector and eleven workers of excise department. The OC of Shantipur police Sourav Chatterjee has also been show-caused and Mukunda Chakraborty has been designated in his place.

Nine people have been died after consuming spurious liquor. One has died in JNM hospital of Kalyani. Alleged person Chandan Mahato and one of his relative have also died. the death toll may rise with the growing time. State government has announced compensation to the deceased families. But such announcement has turned the situation more complicated and sparked political tussle.

West Bengal witnessed one of the worst illicit liquor tragedies in recent times when more than 170 persons died at Sangrampur in South 24 Parganas district in December 2011.
