Sasikala Natrajan Succeeds Amma, Named AIADMK General Secretary

Update: Posters of Sasikala Natarajan being put up after AIADMK adopted resolution to work under her leadership in the party gen body meet. Significantly, the resolution that was adopted says “This general council adopts this resolution appointing Chinnamma VK Sasikala as the party general secretary till such time she is (formally) elected to that post in tune with party rule 20, clause 2.” Till such time she is elected, the party has appointed her to the post giving her all powers of that post.

Update: Sasikala to take charge on January 2, 2017. Party members to visit her. 14 resolutions have been passed in the meet.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(AIADMK) will on  Thursday elect its general secretary in its general council meeting.

“As of now, there is no contest,” senior AIADMK leader C. Ponnaiyan declared on Wednesday.

Senior leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, have backed Ms. Sasikala for the post. All district and lower level party units and various mass organisations affiliated to the AIADMK have urged her to become the general secretary.

On Wednesday, clashes broke out between AIADMK workers and supporters of Rajya Sabha member Sasikala Pushpa outside the ruling party’s office in Chennai.

Sasikala Pushpa has expressed her wish to contest for the party’s general secretary post. Sasikala was expelled from the AIADMK sometime back but did not resign from the Rajya Sabha. Although Sasikala was expected to come in person, but instead, her supporters entered the premises to file nomination papers on her behalf.

Sasikala’s husband and her lawyer were badly injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.She had earlier made startling allegations against Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala Natarajan and raised questions on Amma’s death.
