Mumbai: Aamir Khan’s Christmas release ‘Dangal,’ which also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra and Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles, has received an overwhelming response at the box-office.
The film, a biopic on Indian wrestler and senior Olympics coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, has crossed the coveted Rs 100-crore mark in its first weekend itself.
‘Dangal’ did a humongous business of Rs 42.35 crore on Sunday to take the first weekend total to an excellent figure of Rs 106.95 crore, bringing in the biggest opening weekend ever for an Aamir Khan film. The figure also includes collections from the Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie.
On Sunday, the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film showed a growth of 21.63 percent from Saturday when it collected Rs 34.82 crore. While in North India, the film has shattered the first weekend collection records, it did extremely well in East Punjab due to the Haryanvi setting of the film.
‘Dangal’ becomes Aamir’s fifth film after ‘Ghajini’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Dhoom 3’ and ‘PK’ to enter the Rs 100-crore club. It would be interesting to see how the film fares Monday onwards as now, the film would not have the advantage of Christmas week. However, what works in the film’s favour is that there is no big Bollywood release in the next week.
