Priyanka Dutta, Kolkata: With more than one-third of the world’s population living in areas at risk for infection, dengue virus is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. As many as 400 million people are infected yearly. Dengue is caused by any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes.
Last year West Bengal records highest dengue deaths in country . There are not yet any vaccines to prevent infection with dengue virus and the most effective protective measures are those that avoid mosquito bites. When infected, early recognition and prompt supportive treatment can substantially lower the risk of medical complications and death.

The demand for mosquito nets has risen by a huge extent. “Sales have gone up by almost 30%, while till a few months ago, there were almost no takers for mosquito nets. Mosquito nets for children, however, were always in demand; now the demand has doubled,” he told us.
The sales have seen a massive jump recently, creating a shortage of the products owing to a demand-supply gap. “ Price of the king size bed mosquito net is 300-850rs. And the medium bed size mosquito net is 250-500 rs. And the single bed size mosquito net is 150-300rs. Price may rise on the basis of demand. As we are unable to supply to the retailers on their demand.” Gopal sen, shopkeeper Burrabazar told to Kolkata24x7.com.
Most people are buying these in bulk out of fear .“This is good to know that the demand of buying mosquito nets are in high. It means people are buying for the Dengue attack. I have also came here to buy a mosquito net . The price is very reasonable.” Sumona Pal, a customer from the wholeseller market.
People are buying everything, right from neem oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil to lemongrass oil, to repel mosquitoes and keep dengue at bay. Not only mosquito nets but also the repellents are buying randomly.
