Kolkata: The Calcutta University is all set to confer the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the D. Lit. Degree, for her industrial and literary social services.
However, the state government-funded autonomous institution was criticised by Mamata’s political rivals for ‘blatant display of loyalty’.
“The event shows the extent of boot-licking and appeasement in the education system of the state,” Lok Sabha MP and CPM politburo member Md Salim reportedly said.
BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha also took a dig at the Calcutta University authorities for ‘stooping unimaginably low’.
On Wednesday the Calcutta University on its Senate-Syndicate meeting has decided to present the D.Lit. Degree to the honourable CM on 11 January. Following with a cultural programme the degree will be given to her at the Nazrul Mancha.
According to Sonali Chakraborty, Vice Chancellor of the Calcutta University, Banerjee has agreed to the decision. On the day of felicitation CM Mamata will also present the Dialect Speech.
