Kolkata: The West Bengal CID arrested four persons from Mainaguri town in Jalpaiguri district for allegedly running a cricket betting racket.
The CID alleged that Gopal Sarkar, who owns a shop at Mainaguri town in Jalpaiguri, organised the betting racket. On April 14, police arrested two youths from Gayeshpur in Nadia district.
CID sleuths conducted a raid and arrested Gopal Sarkar, Bhola Das, Pravat Kangsa Banik and Pankaj Saha, he said. Preliminary probe revealed that the accused were using a website to conduct betting in the ongoing Indian Premier League matches where people were contacted to bet, he added.
A case has been started at Mainaguri police station and the four accused would be forwarded to court tomorrow with prayer for police remand, the officer said.
Incidentally, on April 17, six youths including an engineering student, were arrested from Jalpaiguri town on charges of placing bets when the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians was being played.
On April 14, police arrested two youths, Jayanta and Debabrata Biswas, from Gayeshpur in Nadia district and Pappu Das from Dumdum cantonment area in North 24 Parganas district, for their involvement in cricket betting activities.
