Raiganj: A CPM zilla parishad candidate in North Dinajpur has withdrawn her nomination after being abducted along with her husband and college-going daughter, confined in a hotel and threatened for 17 hours by an unidentified gang of five.
Asha Pal was driven to the SDO’s office where she took back her nomination papers on Thursday, after which she was dropped home in the Subhashganj area on the outskirts of Raiganj, the district headquarters.
Asha had not approached police till Friday night but two CPM leaders, including her brother-in-law, filed complaints about the abduction.
Asked about the matter, Trinamool leaders rubbished Asha’s account, said she had pulled out for “personal reasons” and claimed Opposition parties were making up “abduction stories” ahead of Saturday’s nomination withdrawal deadline.
The family’s ordeal began at 9.30pm on Wednesday. “My husband Ranjit called and asked to me to reach Sohrai More (a prominent crossing) with our daughter. He told me a youth will ferry us there on a motorcycle.”
