CPM Wants ‘Deal’ With Congress

Siliguri: Mayor Asok Bhattacharya and Congress councillors at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation are in the process of sealing a “deal” to make the Congress an ally at the Left civic board amid questions on whether an arrangement like this would get the seal of approval of Alimuddin Street.

On Tuesday, Bhattacharya said he had held a meeting with Congress councillors on March 21 after they had expressed interest in joining the Left-run civic board.

“We have welcomed the proposal and based on the talks, it has been decided that both sides will speak to their respective leaderships at different levels and will finalise the decision within a month,” he said.

The mayor, while speaking on the issue, also read out the “agreement” that was signed by him and Sujoy Ghatak, the leader of the Congress at the civic body, after the meeting.
Sources said the Congress councillors, who have twice supported the annual budget tabled by Asok and helped him pass it have shown eagerness to join the board as an ally, instead of continuing to sit in the opposition.
