CPM To Take Out ‘Ram-Rahim’ Rally

Rampurhat: The CPM has decided to take out a rally on the eve of Ram Navami in Rampurhat – a decision that came as a surprise to some party leaders at Alimuddin Street as Communists have always tried to steer clear of religious activities.

Sources in the CPM said the party would take out a procession on March 24, a day before Ram Navami, but it would be termed as a rally of Ram-Rahim, apparently to send out a message to its minority support base, which has been shifting its loyalty to Trinamool, and the secular Hindus. The Left Front chairman, Biman Bose, is likely to attend the rally.

Bengal CPM May Remove ‘Old Comrades’

A surprised CPM state committee member said: “I don’t know about any such plan by the party ahead of Ram Navami. May be the district unit is organising it”. Ram Navami or the birthday of Lord Ram was not widely observed in Bengal until last year when the BJP held several large rallies.

Rampurhat is known as a BJP-RSS stronghold in Birbhum. Last year, around 12,000 people had taken part in the rally on Ram Navami and the BJP social media cell circulated pictures of saffron-clad men joining the march with swords and other sharp weapons.
