CPM Foozles Ally With Congress

Raiganj: A proposal mooted by the North Dinajpur district Congress leaders for an alliance with the CPM for the panchayat elections has been rejected outright by the Left party.

“We have initiated talks with the CPM and other Left parties for an alliance so that Trinamul can be defeated in the rural polls. We are interested in the alliance and feel it would help both the Left and the Congress perform better,” said Mohit Sengupta, the North Dinajpur district Congress president.

Sources said the support base of Congress had eroded sharply in the past few years, particularly after the 2016 Assembly polls.

“These days, the BJP has emerged as the second strong political force in North Dinajpur. It was a bastion of the Congress for several years but its support base has withered fast in the past two-three years. That is why there is no option for the Congress than to propose an alliance with the Left,” said a veteran in politics of the district.
