Kolkata: A sub inspector of Baguiati Police Station that was probing into the Rajarhat school vandalism case was suspended on Wednesday after special branch officers submitted a report to the state highlighting a nexus between the officer and the promoter behind the vandalism last Saturday.
Tamal Sarkar is a sub inspector of the police station who had joined duty at the police station barely a month ago. Prior to this posting he was associated with the detective department of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
According to a police source, days after chief minister Mamata Banerjee had spoken tough against the vandalism and asked for a detailed enquiry, the special branch has submitted evidences including a CCTV footage that shows the sub inspector meeting the promoter Mizanur Rahman a day before the vandalism. The source said Sarkar had allegedly met Rahman without knowledge of the inspector in charge of the police station and had given him an assurance to go ahead with the vandalism and handle the case if any trouble occurs.
On Saturday around 1am, Rahman along with a group of 80 men broke inside the Lilavati Memorial Institute at Dashadrone in Rajarhat and razed down the walls and roof of the school to take possession of the property. When teachers arrived in the morning, the men even thrashed them before leaving the place before cops arrived.
On Saturday morning Sarkar had also visited the spot. A senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate confirmed his suspension stating that he would not be able to join office till further order. “A departmental enquiry has been initiated against Sarkar and he would not be able to join office till the report is submitted and further order is given,” said the officer.
Bidhannagar Mayor Sabyasachi Datta had spoke in open about the nexus between the police and the promoter when he had visited the school a day after the vandalism. “I have heard some officers from the police department are directly associated with the case and had full knowledge about the demolition and the men behind the attack,” Datta had said.
After Sarkar’s role was put under question, the Bidhannagar police commissioner relieved the police station from the investigation of the case and handed it over to the detective department.
Meanwhile probing into the case police have arrested another aide of the promoter, Buddhadeb Das from Chinar Park area on Wednesday. Sources said Das is a local Trinamool leader and is allegedly close to the local councillors in the area.
