Cooch Behar: Independent member of the Cooch Behar zila parishad said he wants to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The ruling party had won all but one seat in this zila parishad in the elections to the three-tier panchayat system in the state last month.
As the Independent candidate who had managed to win a single seat in the Panchayat polls joining the Trinamool Congress, the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad became opposition free now. Krishna Kanta Burman had won a single seat in Cooch Behar in the Panchayat elections. Burman had contested the elections as an Independent as he was unhappy over the fact that he was denied a TMC ticket.
However, Krishna Kanta Burman claimed that he was earlier with the TMC but contested as an Independent after a fallout with district party leadership.
The panchayat election was held in 20 districts across the state on May 14. Out of the 32 Zilla Parishad seats in Cooch Behar where voting had taken place, the TMC has won in 32 after the joining of the Independent candidate.
Independent Candidate Krishnakanta Burman now planning to join it, and the addition of Cooch Behar zilla parishad in its kitty, the Trinamool Congress will have all seats of 11 zilla parishads, the others being in Jalpaiguri, South Dinajpur, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Hooghly, East Midnapore and West Midnapore.
On Sunday Burman met TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee and expressed his desire to return to the party. Partha Chatterjee said he would request party chief Mamata Banerjee to consider Burman’s request. Burman was accompanied by TMC leader Kunal Ghosh.
It may be mentioned that during the panchayat polls over 20 people were injured after clashes broke out in Cooch Behar. Locals alleged that Trinamool Congress workers thrashed them.
