Suri: Having biriyani when the National Anthem was on has sparked controversy on May Day at Birbhum’s Suri. Members of INTUC, Congress labour organization had gathered at a conference on the occasion of International Labour Day on Monday. The venue of the conference was DRDC auditorium.
Present on the occasion were former state Congress president Soumen Mitra, district Congress president Sayed Siraj Jimmi, West Bengal Minority Cell’s Chairman Milton Rashid, district Kishan Khet Mazdoor Congress chairman Sayed Kasafdozza, INTUC’s district president Mrinal Bose along with several labour leaders.
The members who were present at the occasion were given biriyani packets for lunch. The packets were handed over at noon just prior to the conclusive episode of the seminar. But few of the members started eating while still sitting at the auditorium.
At the end of the seminar, National Anthem was sung and before that everyone was requested to stand. Those who were eating had to stand as per instruction but they could not stop eating. Thus they have shown disrespect to the National Anthem.
Though leaders are tight lipped regarding the whole state of affairs, but president of Birbhum district Congress president Syed Siraj Jimmi said that it is a very sad incident. “We are very sorry about it.”
